FAMILY OF “MEALS ON WHEELS” VOLUNTEER KILLED BY
FED EX TRUCK FILES A WRONGFUL DEATH LAWSUIT
The family of Newton Edward “Bill” Nichols, a 78 year old resident of Hockley County has filed a Wrongful Death Suit against Federal Express and its delivery driver for negligence in causing Mr. Nichols’ death. On September 29, 2008, Mr. Nichols was returning to Levelland on FM 300 after having delivered meals outside the city limits for “Meals on Wheels” when his vehicle was struck by a delivery van being operated by a Federal Express employee. The Fed Ex driver suddenly turned left into Mr. Nichols’ lane of travel causing a head-on collision. Mr. Nichols was transported to the hospital in Levelland where he was assessed to be in critical condition and was then transferred to Covenant Hospital in Lubbock where he later died from his injuries.
Mr. Nichols was a well respected member of the Levelland community. He had moved to Levelland after being a farmer for over 40 years. He spent the majority of his retirement volunteering and serving the community of Levelland.
The lawsuit was filed by Mr. Nichols family this morning in Lubbock County District Court.
